2012-13 Northwestern Nonconference Schedule
EVANSTON, Ill. -
Home games against Maryland, Stanford and Butler and road trips to Baylor and the South Padre Island Invitational highlight the nonconference portion of the 2012-13 Northwestern men's basketball schedule announced today.
The Wildcats open their slate on Nov. 13 when they host Texas Southern at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Two days later, NU welcomes 2012 NCAA Tournament participant Mississippi Valley State to Evanston.
Northwestern plays a pair of home games affiliated with the South Padre Island Invitational on Nov. 18 and 20 as it squares off against Fairleigh Dickinson and Delaware State, respectively.
The 'Cats then venture to Texas later that week as they play a pair of games against Illinois State, TCU or UAB the two days immediately following Thanksgiving.
Upon its return to the Land of Lincoln, Northwestern hosts Maryland as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Nov. 27. The Wildcats have a four-game winning streak in the Challenge, tied for the longest by a Big Ten team in the history of the event. NU renews acquaintances with a local foe Dec. 1 as it opens a three-year series with UIC at Welsh-Ryan.
Northwestern's one true road game of the nonconference slate follows as it returns to Texas to square off against Baylor in Waco Dec. 4. The Bears advanced to the Elite Eight round of last year's NCAA tournament before falling to eventual champion Kentucky.
Following a two-year hiatus from the series, NU opens up a home-and-home set with Butler Dec. 8 when the teams face off in Evanston. The Bulldogs finished as national runners-up in both 2010 and 2011.
Following a nine-day break for final exams, the Wildcats return to action Dec. 18, hosting Texas State. The contest precedes the renewal of NU's series with Stanford three days later. The Cardinal captured the National Invitational Tournament title last season, defeating Minnesota in the championship game.
The pre-Big Ten portion of the season concludes Dec. 23 at Welsh-Ryan Arena as Northwestern takes on Brown.
Game times and television designations will be announced at a later date. The Big Ten Conference is tentatively slated to release the league schedule in mid-August. The Wildcats will also play an exhibition game on a date to be determined prior to the start of the regular season.
Northwestern is coming off its fourth-consecutive postseason appearance, posting a 19-14 overall record and an 8-10 mark in 2011-12. The Wildcats return four starters and seven letterwinners from last year's squad.
