2014-15 Northwestern Men's Basketball Nonconference Schedule

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's men's basketball program today (June 16) announced its nonconference schedule for the upcoming 2014-15 campaign.

"With a number of talented newcomers joining a solid returning core this fall, we're looking forward to getting the regular season started on Nov. 14," Northwestern head coach Chris Collins said. "We'll be tested in late November and into December with the Cancun Challenge, a visit from Georgia Tech in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and a trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse to take on Butler as we prepare for what is always a grueling conference slate."

The Wildcats will host an exhibition game on a date and against an opponent to be determined prior to opening the regular season at home against Houston Baptist on Nov. 14. The matchup will be the first meeting between the schools.

Northwestern follows up the contest with a trip to the East Coast three days later, taking on Brown in Providence, R.I. The Wildcats defeated the Bears 58-52 at Welsh-Ryan Arena last season and will be making their first trip to the Pizzitola Sports Center since Nov. 22, 2008, when NU posted a 73-64 win behind 31 points and a school-record nine 3-pointers by Craig Moore.

The 'Cats are back home Nov. 20 to open up a string of four games associated with the Cancun Challenge. Northwestern hosts a pair of opponents to be determined on the 20th and 22nd before competing in Cancun on the 25th and 26th. NU's potential opponents in Mexico include Virginia Tech, Northern Iowa and UCF.

Northwestern returns home Dec. 3, taking on Georgia Tech as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. It will be the third all-time meeting between the schools with each of the two previous matchups coming in the Challenge, both won by the Wildcats: 91-71 Nov. 30, 2010, in Evanston and 76-60 Nov. 29, 2011, in Atlanta.

NU plays its fourth and final nonconference game away from Evanston Dec. 6, traveling to Indianapolis to take on Butler. The 'Cats hold a 16-9 edge in the all-time series with the Bulldogs. It will be Northwestern's first contest at Hinkle Fieldhouse since a narrow 57-53 loss on Nov. 26, 2008.

Following a week off for final exams, the Wildcats wrap their pre-Big Ten slate with five consecutive games at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The stretch starts with a contest against Mississippi Valley State Dec. 14, a team NU has beaten three times in four previous meetings, including an 81-68 win Nov. 15, 2012.

The homestand continues with a pair of schools from the Great Lakes State. Central Michigan makes the trek to Evanston Dec. 17. The 'Cats are a perfect 3-0 all-time against the Chippewas, though the teams haven't met since a 70-49 victory by Northwestern Nov. 26, 1996, at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Western Michigan is one of the Wildcats' most often played nonconference opponents all-time with the teams having met 27 times. Northwestern has dominated the series, winning 22 of those meetings, including a convincing 51-35 win Dec. 7 of last season in Evanston. The Broncos make a return trip to Evanston Dec. 20 following an NCAA tournament appearance a year ago.

Crosstown foe UIC comes to Welsh-Ryan Arena Dec. 22. The teams have split their eight meetings to date with Northwestern dominating the Flames to the tune of a 93-58 victory Nov. 20, 2013, at UIC Pavilion behind a career-high 25-point performance by Dave Sobolewski.

The nonconference winds to a close Dec. 27 at home against Northern Kentucky. The contest will be the first meeting between the schools.

Season tickets are now on sale and renewals are available for the upcoming 2014-15 Northwestern home season. The Wildcats will play a total of 19 home games this season, including Big Ten matchups against Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin. Dates and tip times for conference contests will be announced later this summer as will tip times for the nonconference matchups.
