EVANSTON, Ill. -
YWCA Evanston/North Shore is hosting its 12th annual "Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate" at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, June 19. The event is dedicated to the honor of the former Northwestern men's basketball coach who was tragically killed in a hate crime in his suburban Chicago neighborhood on July 2, 1999.
The event consists of a 10K run, followed by a 5K run/walk and then a youth mile. The course begins at Long Field, on the corner of Lincoln Street and Sheridan Road in Evanston.
In preparation for the event, the Northwestern women's cross country team has worked together with students from St. Joan of Arc to train for the outing.
"Our squad teamed up with classes at St. Joan of Arc and talked to them about not only running, but also healthy life-style choices," Northwestern head coach April Likhite said. "We also provided the school with a 10-week training plan that prepared them for either the mile fun run or the 5K race. It was a great opportunity for our women to give back to the community while at the same time promote something that they are all very passionate about."
