WATCH: Shurna wins State Farm 3-point Championship

EVANSTON, Ill. - For four years, John Shurna showed regularly that he knew how to put the ball in the basket. That didn't change Thursday evening at the 2012 State Farm College Slam Dunk and 3-point Championships in New Orleans.

The Wildcat knocked down his final seven shots in the championship round to edge Temple's Juan Fernandez 21-20 to take home the Hampton Hotels Men's 3-Point Championship.

One of eight competitors, Shurna posted the third-highest total the opening round as he totaled 15 points. The top four individuals advanced on to the semifinals.

Shooting second in the semis, Shurna recorded a stellar score of 20 which was the top total of the round, barely edging out Fernandez who had 19 points.

Fernandez shot first in the championship round and recorded a 20-point total, putting the pressure on Shurna. With just 10 attempts remaining heading into the final two racks of five balls apiece, Shurna caught fire at the right time, making nine of his last 10 tries, including each of the last seven, to narrowly defeat Fernandez by one point.

Later on, Shurna squared off against women's champion Ashley Corral of USC and recorded a lights-out total of 24 points in cruising to a 10-point victory to win the Pure Protein Battle of the Champions crown.

Shurna ranks third all-time at Northwestern with 294 career 3-point makes. He connected on 95 triples during the 2011-12 season, shooting 44 percent from beyond the arc.

His stay in New Orleans isn't over as he'll also compete in the Reese's College All-Star Game Friday afternoon. The broadcast of the game airs at noon Saturday on TruTV.
