MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Sean Mason scored 18 points as the Wisconsin Badgers beat Northwestern 56-33 Saturday in their inaugural game in the $76.4 million Kohl Center.

Wisconsin (10-7, 3-2 Big Ten) led 28-26 until Mason sank a 3-point shot to begin a 15-point second-half run. He added a 3-pointer and a field goal as the Badgers built a 43-26 lead midway through the half.

The Wildcats (7-7, 1-4) went scoreless for more than seven minutes before Evan Eschmeyer scored a layup.

Eschmeyer led Northwestern with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Wisconsin relied on defense in building a 23-18 halftime lead.

The Wildcats made just one of their first 10 field goal attempts and shot 31.6 percent in the half. They were 34 percent for the game.

The Kohl Center, designed for hockey and concerts as well as basketball, replaces UW's 67-year-old field house.
