Wildcats Win Exhibition Opener
'Cats Down Venezuela National Select Team
EVANSTON, Ill.--In their first game Tuesday under new head basketball coach Kevin O'Neill, the Northwestern Wildcats defeated the Venuezuela National Select Team, 69-45, at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
"We weren't spectacular, we've got a long ways to go," said O'Neill. "I though we played some good streches of basketball."
The 'Cats held a solid lead throughout the game, increasing a 14-point halftime lead to the final 24-point margin. All-America candidate Evan Eschmeyer finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds, on 11-for-13 shooting from the field. Junior Julian Bonner also turned in a strong performance, scoring 11 points, including a 3-for-5 performance from three-point range. Bonner also grabbed eight boards in 39 minutes.
The prospects for the future looked bright, as freshmen Sean Wink and Jeff Eschmeyer played well in their NU debuts. Wink had eight points and six assists, while Jeff, the brother of center Evan Eschmeyer came off the bench with 11 strong minutes of play.
Leading the Venezuelan team was guard Almiro Coello with 10 points.
The Wildcats play their second exhibition game of the season on Tues., Nov. 11 against Athletes in Action. Tipoff time is slated for 7 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
