    Northwestern Head Coach Bill Carmody

    Opening Statement...
"I thought they defended very well, when they came off a tough loss to Michigan State the other day at home, and they came back. They seemed a little shaky at first, just like we did, in the first ten minutes. Neither team could get anything going. It went from a tie game, 10-10, and all of a sudden it was 19-10, and they controlled the game from there. I thought our defense was good in the first half. Their offense wasn't so good, and it was the same for them. We're having a hard time putting the ball in the basket, and I don't want to take anything away from Iowa because I think they defended very well. Their freshman, who are very highly touted, 1-7 (shooting), their starters, 1-8 (shooting), but their veterans, [Aaron] White, [Roy Devyn] Marble and [Melsahn]Basabe all had really good games. I've been trying to tell our team that the veterans have to do it. Anything we can get from younger guys right now is great, just like them. We're out there, competing and all, but we're unable to do anything. It has to be the veterans, and I just didn't think our veterans did enough today to make us win."

    On the team struggles...
"You think it's the defense, but I think it's our offense that is lacking, to tell you the truth. There's so much pressure on your defense to make stops, but then you can't score at the other end, and all you're doing is trying to guard, and you don't have any success at the other end."

On Kale Abrahamson's play and facing his in-state school...
"This guy, [Adam] Woodbury, was one of the best recruits in the country, and he was only 1-7 (shooting). [Mike] Gesell, same thing, 1-8 (shooting). AAU teammates of his actually. You can shoot the ball, but you have to figure out how you're going to get open to get the ball. It's not surprising to me because he does it in practices. He can be guarded and now we have to figure out a way to get him open so that he can make some shots."

    On the team's offensive struggles...
"I think it's been throughout the whole year, to tell you the truth. We are having a hard time figuring out who is going to score. Again, their veterans in here, 7-9, 4-8, 5-6, 5-11, and we didn't get that out of our older guys, and I just think that, especially [Jared] Swopshire, when he scores 12 points or so, usually we win. If he's not scoring - he just seemed to be floating out there - but he does get us some rebounds and usually guards pretty well."

    On getting better veteran play...
"We've addressed this before. We're trying to run certain plays for certain guys to do certain things, and the last week before going into Penn State, we just said let's not call so much and just let it flow from one thing to the next, but tonight it was just stagnant. Again, I don't want to dwell on this, but our offense has been a problem for awhile now, but Iowa defended very well."
