EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern Baseball hosted its annual Alumni Weekend Sept. 28-30 and the event brought together scores of familiar faces for golf, tailgating and the annual baseball contest at Rocky Miller Park.
The weekend kicked off on Friday, Sept. 28 with a golf outing at Wilmette Golf Club in nearby Wilmette, Ill. 90 golfers took aim at a first-place finish and two teams posted the lowest score of the day at 11-under-par, but by netting the lowest score from the firs hole forward, the team comprised of Joe Keenan, Pat Kelly, Mark Zimmer and Dick Lane was declared the winner.
Also coming in at -11 under was the team of Steve Libman, Dan Burnes, Dennis Lapidius and Jim Greicco. Assistant coach and former student-athlete Jon Mikrut's team finished in third place with a score of 10-under-par. Mikrut was joined on the links by Pat McMahon, Geoff Dietz and Tony Vercelli.
The outing also featured a longest drive and closest-to-the-pin competition. On Wilmette's longest hole, the 506-yard 17th, Bill Campbell launched the furthest drive in the 60-and-over division to edge Ken Ward, while Dan Pohlman outdrove Jason Krynski to win the 59-and-under group.
Holes 2, 7, 12 and 16 hosted the closest-to-the-pin contests. Dick Lane
stuck it closest on No. 2, while Alan Jahns
took honors on No. 7. Steve Seyferth
was up to the task on No. 12 and Rich Sexton
won the challenge on No. 16.
Northwestern Baseball would like to especially thank the following sponsors for their great support of the golf outing: Will to Live Foundation, Bob Reeder, Joe and Shay Hietpas, Stamos & Trucco, LLP and Robert Rauth International.
After golf, 110 people came together for a celebratory evening at Wildfire Restaurant.
Saturday's main event was a fun-filled tailgate surrounding Northwestern's thrilling 44-29 victory over Indiana on the gridiron at Ryan Field. More than 100 friends of the program were in attendance.
Alumni Weekend concluded Sunday with a seven-inning ballgame between the alums and the current Wildcats and a cookout proceeding the game. The Alumni took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but the 'Cats crossed the plate twice in the home half to walk off victoriously. For a full recap of the game, click here.
Special thanks to Bud Pohlman and Rose Packing for supporting the tailgate and postgame cookout.
Mark your calendars now and be sure to join the Wildcats for the 2013 Alumni Weekend, scheduled for Oct. 4-6.
