EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern third baseman Chris Lashmet (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the first pick of the 33rd round of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday.
A four-year starter for the Wildcats, Lashmet ranks second in school history with 49 doubles, fourth with 238 hits and 743 at-bats, fifth with 355 total bases and 10th with 20 home runs.
He paced the Wildcats with a .353 batting average, 16 doubles and 67 hits during the 2011 campaign and was named a second-team All-Big Ten selection at third base. His .387 average in conference play was the fourth-best mark in the league. Lashmet was a first-team All-Big Ten pick his junior year after hitting .327 with team bests of eight home runs and 43 runs batted in.
A career .320 hitter, he appeared in 198 games including making 196 starts during his four years in a Wildcat uniform.
