EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern freshman Joe Hoscheit helped the Wildcats conclude the 2014 regular season by winning a series at Ohio State and the newcomer was recognized as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday (May 19).

Hoscheit was a key contributor both at the plate and on the mound against the Buckeyes over the weekend. He batted .417 (5-for-12) with two doubles and his first career stolen base.

A utility player who did not pitch in a game this season until April 22, Hoscheit was summoned out of the bullpen on May 15 to try and get the final out with they tying run at the plate. The St. Charles, Ill., native needed only two pitches Thursday, getting Ronnie Dawson to fly out to center field to end the game and earning his first career save.

In game two of the series on May 16, Hoscheit collected a career-high three hits and earned his second save in as many days. With the 'Cats hanging to a one-run lead, the right-handed pitcher came on in the bottom of the eighth and allowed only one hit over the next two innings to secure the save and help Northwestern clinch its first series victory in Columbus, Ohio since the 1989 season.

In both games that he pitched, Hoscheit showed off his versatility by starting for the Wildcats at third base, and also playing left field, before taking the mound to earn a pair of saves.

Hoscheit batted .258 during his inaugural season in Evanston with 23 RBI and a team-high four home runs. He tied for the team lead with 15 extra-base hits and scored 20 times during the year. As a pitcher, he posted a 0.87 ERA and two saves in six appearances. Hoscheit struck out six and walked only one while limiting the opposition to a .150 batting average.

This is the first Big Ten weekly award that Hoscheit has received. Matt Hopfner was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Feb. 24 and Jack Quigley claimed Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week honors on April 21.
