EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will conclude a stretch of eight games in nine days, as well as the Big Ten portion of its schedule, this weekend with a trip to Bloomington, Ind. to face the 14th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers in a three-game series.
FARRELL FETCHES ANOTHER BIG TEN HONOR
Senior Luke Farrell was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, May 7 for the second time in three weeks. The Westlake, Ohio, native was brilliant once again as he stifled the Ohio State Buckeyes on May 4. Farrell allowed just two hits over eight innings, while striking out eight to secure his third win of the season. In his last three starts, Farrell is 2-0 with a 0.36 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 25 IP. He currently leads the Big Ten with a 1.60 ERA and 72 strikeouts.
Northwestern is 5-2 in extra-inning affairs this season following its 5-3 victory at UIC on Tuesday night. This is the first time the Wildcats have played seven extra-inning games since 1993 when they went 2-5 in extended ballgames. That year, however, three of the contests were only eight innings because they were scheduled as seven-inning games.
GRAB SOME BENCH
On the mound, Northwestern's pitching staff leads the league in strikeouts this season with 7.5 per game through 42 contests. The Wildcats weekend rotation is averaging 4.7 strikeouts per outing. Luke Farrell leads the Big Ten with 72 strikeouts (7.2 per game) and reliever Dan Tyson leads the team with a 10.3 K/9 IP ratio. Kyle Ruchim and Jack Livingston are at 9.8 and 9.6 K/9 IP, respectively.
Northwestern's lineup has produced 81 doubles this season or nearly two per game. Eight players have at least five doubles in 2013, led by Kyle Ruchim, who has 12. On the flip side, the Wildcats pitching staff has surrendered only 49 two-base hits, the fewest in the conference. NU's three primary starting pitchers have allowed only 25 doubles in 216.0 innings pitched.
SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS
Indiana is ranked 14th in the country this week and currently sits in second place in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers lead the conference in nearly every offensive category, including average (.310), slugging (.456) and OBP (.395). The pitching staff is also one of the Big Ten's best with a league-low 2.36 ERA and it has allowed the fewest runs at 148. Individually, Dustin DeMuth boasts a team-best .398 batting average and Scott Donley leads IU and is tied for the conference lead with 47 RBI. On the mound, this weekend's three probables are all tied with seven wins, while left-hander Joey DeNato (Friday's probable) leads the club with 61 strikeouts in 68.2 innings of work. Ryan Halstead leads Indiana with eight saves and Scott Efross also has five.
