EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will play its first midweek game of the season Wednesday when it travels to Ypsilanti, Mich. in order to take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles at Oestrike Stadium at 2 p.m. CT. It will be just the second meeting ever between the Wildcats and EMU.
Three members of Northwestern's squad hail from the state of Michigan. Senior reliever Jack Quigley is from Birmingham, where he prepped at Seaholm H.S. Quigley won four letters in baseball and basketball and three in football as an honorable mention All-State linebacker. Senior two-way player Jack Livingston was the 2010 Michigan Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year and a two-time All-Region pick at Portage Northern H.S. in Kalamazoo. Junior outfielder Luke Dauch is from Bloomfield Hills and went to Lahser H.S., where he earned All-State honors after batting .530 with six homers and 36 RBI as a senior in 2011.
Head Of The Class
Freshman outfielder Matt Hopfner has not only led the Wildcats in hitting since the season began, he's been one of the conference's best as well. The Edina, Minn., native is batting a team-high .389, which ranks him second in the Big Ten. He also leads Northwestern in on-base percentage (.338) and hits (28), which places him seventh and tied for eighth in those respective categories. Hopfner reached base safely in the first 17 games of his career and posted a 10-game hitting streak between March 2-22. Finally, Hopfner leads the Wildcats with 10 multi-hit games this season.
Redshirt junior Cody Stevens returned to the diamond on opening weekend for Northwestern for the first time since the 2012 campaign. The Glenview, Ill., native missed all of last season while recovering from a blood clot that developed in his brain after he was hit by a pitch in a Prospect League game. Stevens was the recipient of the 2013 CollegeBaseballInsider.com Tom Walter Inspiration Award, an honor named after the Wake Forest head coach who donated a kidney to one of his players in 2011. Stevens is one of four Wildcats to start all 17 games this season. The infielder has six RBI and leads Northwestern with three stolen bases and 10 runs scored.
NU won the only previous matchup in the all-time series, 8-0, on Feb. 25, 2001 in Lake Charles, La. Michael Nall struck out 11 in a complete-game shutout, while Joe Hietpas and Matt Thompson homered in the game for the 'Cats.
After playing the Eagles, Northwestern will continue to trek east as it hops back into Big Ten play with a three-game series at Penn State, March 28-30. No current member of the Wildcats team has ever played at Medlar Field. NU's last trip to University Park, Pa. came April 9-11, 2010 when it took two out of three from the Nittany Lions.
