PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Northwestern newcomer Zach Jones was recognized for an outstanding weekend at the plate during the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational when he was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week Monday. It is the first weekly honor of his young career.
Jones was called upon to pinch hit during all three of Northwestern's games in the Sunshine State over the weekend and each time he delivered significant results. In Thursday's 12-3 victory over LIU Brooklyn, the Glenview, Ill., native delivered a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to allow Kyle Ruchim to score.
During Friday's one-run triumph over North Dakota State, Jones produced the biggest base hit of his tenure as a Wildcat with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and his team trailing by a run. Called upon to pinch hit for the second game in a row, Jones hit a rocket past the NDSU second baseman to allow Ruchim to score from third and ultimately force extra innings. The Wildcats were able to win the game, 3-2, in the bottom of the 11th when Trevor Stevens singled to bring home Scott Heelan for NU's first walk-off win of the season.
In Northwestern's final tilt at the RussMatt Invitational, Jones sent a pinch-hit RBI single into center field that allowed Ruchim and Jack Havey to score the 16th and 17th runs of the game for the Wildcats. NU defeated Bucknell, 17-2, to complete a three-game sweep of the weekend.
Jones is batting .375 with four RBI in 2013. He is the first Northwestern player to garner a weekly honor since Brandon Magallones
was named Co-Pitcher and Co-Freshman of the Week on March 26, 2012.
