EVANSTON, Ill. -
Wintery conditions in the Chicagoland area Thursday forced the cancellation of the Northwestern baseball team's flight to California and along with it the scheduled series opener between the Wildcats and Cal State Northridge that was slated for Friday.
The teams will play the final three games of the series as scheduled, beginning with a doubleheader that gets underway at 1 p.m. Central time Saturday. The series finale is set for 3 p.m. Central on Sunday.
Northwestern is coming off one win in its three games at the season-opening Big Ten/Big East Challenge in Florida. The Wildcats opened with a 7-3 loss to West Virginia before posting a 12-11 comeback win over Pittsburgh in 10 innings, rallying back from six runs down. NU finished up the Challenge with a 6-3 loss to Seton Hall.
The Wildcats' bats were hot last weekend as they collected at least 10 hits in all three of the games, posting a .345 batting average on the weekend. Luke Dauch, who was tabbed the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week, led the way with a .714 average (5-7), collecting three extra-base hits, two stolen bases and a 1.286 slugging percentage. Paul Snieder tallied a team-high seven runs batted in, while Nick Linne paced the squad with six hits and four runs scored.
Despite having limited opportunities to be outdoors prior to the start of the season, NU committed just two errors in the three contests.
Head coach Paul Stevens
, in his 25th season at Northwestern, enters the series with 598 career victories.
