EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Kyle Ruchim has been named to the ninth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List the association announced Friday. The ninth-annual honor will be bestowed upon the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball on June 15, the opening day of the College World Series.
Ruchim led the Wildcats with seven saves in 2012 as sophomore. The hard-throwing right-hander posted a 3.38 ERA in 17 appearances, surrendering only seven runs on 18 hits in that span. The Buffalo Grove, Ill., native fanned 24 batters while exhibiting excellent control in issuing only five bases-on-balls.
In addition to being a key cog in the Northwestern bullpen, Ruchim was a force in the lineup as well. He batted .289 while starting all 54 games and led the Wildcats with 12 doubles and ranked second with 26 RBI. The speedy infielder also led NU with 10 stolen bases.
Ruchim is one of five relievers from the Big Ten to be added to the watch list this season joining a pair from Illinois and one pitcher from both Ohio State and Nebraska.
Northwestern opens the 2013 campaign on Friday, Feb. 15 at the First Pitch Invitational in Greenville, S.C. The 'Cats open the season against Miami (OH) Friday at 11 a.m. CT and will also face Furman and Michigan State during the opening weekend at Fluor Field.
