Northwestern Baseball Defeats NE Illinois, 7-3
Robinson Hits Three-Run Homer
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wes Robinson hit his second homer of the season and catcher Joe Hietpas added two doubles as Northwestern defeated Northeastern Illinois on Wednesday afternoon, 7-3. NU improves to 19-18 overall while Northeastern Illinois falls to 8-25. The 'Cats opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Jeremy Kurella and a sacrifice fly by Patrick Thompson. NEIU closed the gap to 2-1 in the top of the fourth before Northwestern struck for five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 7-1 lead. In the fourth inning, Hietpas opened the frame with a double to left field. Ollie Dunn singled to right and, two batters later, Robinson knocked a three-run homer to up NU's lead at the time to 5-1. The offense continued to sparkle after the homer, with Kurella and Thompson adding their second RBIs of the game.
Seven Wildcats pitched for NU on Wednesday. John Seaman opened the game, followed by J.J. Standring in innings 2-4. Standring would receove credit for the win, his first as a Wildcat. Southpaw Dan Padgett tossed the fifth and sixth innings with Charlie Williamson and Nick Franzese going in the seventh and eighth, respectively. Jacob Briskman notched the first two outs in the ninth inning before Ben Dodd closed out the game. Offensively, Kurella, Thompson and Hietpas each knocked two hits with Kurella, Thompson and Robinson combining for all seven RBIs. NU also went 4-for-4 in stolen bases by Kurella, Ollie Dunn, Kris Musselman and Ken Kilian.
Northwestern hosts Purdue this weekend in a four-game series at Rocky Miller Park. Friday's single game starts at 3 p.m., with Saturday's twinbill and Sunday's finale at 1 p.m. The Friday and Sunday games will be broadcast on WNUR 89.3 FM.
