    Baseball Blanks Northeastern Illinois, 9-0

Dan Padgett and Jacob Briskman Combine on Three-Hitter

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Dan Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) and freshman Jacob Briskman (Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield) combined to toss a three-hit shutout as Northwestern won at Chicagoland-rival Northeastern Illinois on Wednesday afternoon, 9-0. NU is now 18-14 overall while NE Illinois drops to 7-20.

The 'Cats opened the scoring in the top of the first as, with two outs, Brian Baron and Patrick Thompson singled to bring up left fielder Mike Stritch, last week's Big Ten Player of the Week. Stritch proceeded to knock a three-run homer down the right field line, his fifth of the season, to give NU a 3-0 lead. Center fielder Kris Musselman made the game 4-0 with a solo shot to left field.

NU increased the lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by J.P. Williamson and an RBI single by Jeremy Kurella. The Wildcats tacked two more runs on the board in the sixth inning on a two-out, two-RBI single by Bob Dainton, en route to the 9-0 victory. Offensively for NU, Kurella went 3-for-5 while five Wildcats (Williamson, Baron, Thompson, Stritch and Dainton) knocked two base hits apiece.

Padgett was lifted after pitching the first four innings, allowing just one hit while fanning four batters. Briskman, making only his second collegiate appearance, gave up two hits in the final five innings while also striking out four batters to earn his first victory as a Wildcat.

Northwestern travels to Bloomington, Ind., this weekend for a four-game series against the Indiana Hoosiers.
