Northwestern Baseball Defeats Lewis, 6-2
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior righty Nick Franzese (Barrington,
Ill./Barrington) scattered seven hits and fanned five batters in 7 1/3
innings and Patrick Thompson (Libertyville, Ill./ Libertyville) knocked
his third homer of the season as Northwestern defeated Lewis this
afternoon at Rocky Miller Park, 6-2. NU improves to 17-14 on the season
while Lewis drops to
19-16.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI single by
Thompson, bringing home Brian Baron, who had doubled earlier in the
inning. The Flyers tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning on an RBI
single by second baseman Pat Morici. Thompson enabled NU to claim a 2-1
lead in the bottom of the sixth, opening the inning with a home run to
left field. The ‘Cats added two more runs in the seventh and eighth
innings to win the game, 6-2.
Thompson finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Baron went
3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Franzese earned the victory,
improving to 3-2 on the season, while Bob Jennings (1-2) took the loss.
Wildcat southpaw Ben Dodd earned his first save of the year, allowing
just two hits in the final 1 2/3 innings.
NU travels to Northeastern Illinois on Wednesday afternoon for a 3 p.m.
single game. Note: This game was added to the schedule early Tuesday
morning.
