Wildcat Baseball Falls to No. 17 Wichita State, 14-9
Musselman hits second homer of the year
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore center fielder Kris Musselman went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, including his second homer of the season, but Wichita State used a six-run ninth inning to defeat Northwestern on Saturday, 14-9, in the Coca-Cola Classic in Mobile, Ala.. The Wildcats are now 4-2 while the 17th-ranked Shockers improve to 1-1. NU faces Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday, with Wichita State waking on 10th-ranked South Alabama.
NU opened up a 5-0 lead after three innings, scoring four runs in the second inning, two of which came on Musselman's homer to right field. Brian Baron and Mike Stritch each knocked RBI doubles later in the second inning. Musselman added another RBI in the third inning, bringing home Ollie Dunn for the 5-0 lead. Wichita State would eventually make a comeback in the sixth inning with five runs of their own, tying the game at 7-7, and taking an 8-7 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Wildcats scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to reclaim a 9-8 lead. Musselman notched his fourth RBI of the game, bringing home Chris Pedersen on a grounder to second to tie the game. J.P. Williamson followed with an RBI single to center, bringing home Dunn with the go-ahead run.
Wichita State sent 11 batters to the plate in the ninth inning, scoring six times on just four hits, mostly off freshman J.J. Standring. Charlie Williamson relieved Standring in the middle of the ninth, allowing one hit and one unearned run in two-thirds of an inning. NU went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to close the 14-9 loss. In addition to Musselman's offensive effort, Mike Stritch went 2-for-5 with two RBI doubles, Brian Baron was 2-for-4 with a double while Ollie Dunn was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. John Seaman started the game on the hill for NU, allowing five hits and six runs in 5.1 innings. Phil Rosengren relieved Seaman, allowing two hits and two runs in 1.2 innings.
