    Wildcat Baseball Upsets No. 9 Texas Tech

    Hietpas Hits First Collegiate Homer

    EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern baseball team improved to 3-1 on the season, upsetting ninth-ranked Texas Tech on Sunday at the Rawlings Spring Training Tournament in Phoenix, 7-2.

    NU opened the game with three runs in both the first and second innings to take a 6-1 lead after two innings of play. John Seaman earned his first win of the season, throwing 6.2 innings of four-hit baseball and allowing two unearned runs.

    Freshman J.J. Standring tossed a eighth and ninth inning to seal the win. NU was a perfect 4-for-4 on the basepaths, with steals by Ken Kilian, Jeremy Kurella, Chris Pedersen and Joe Hietpas. Offensively, Kilian went 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, two walks, two RBI and a stolen base in the leadoff spot.

    Kurella went 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and two RBI, while Brian Baron also went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Hietpas hit a solo homer as part of a 2-for-3 afternoon, the first of his NU career. Third baseman J.P. Williamson was the fourth Wildcat with multiple hits on Sunday, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

    The baseball team is back in action beginning Fri., Feb. 27, when the 'Cats take on South Alabama in the Coca-Cola Classic in Mobile, Ala. NU also faces Wichita State on Feb. 28 and Southeastern Louisiana on March 1 in Mobile.
