Gophers Shut Out Wildcats 1-0; Kontos Strikes Out Nine in Hard-Luck Loss
May 6, 2006
EVANSTON, Ill. - Mirror images. That is the best way to describe Northwestern's doubleheader against Minnesota Saturday afternoon in Evanston. The Wildcats won game one 1-0, the Gophers won game two 1-0. Each winning pitcher threw a complete game, both set season highs in strikeouts. The only problem was George Kontos, Northwestern's game two starter, also threw a complete game, struck out a season high nine, but was the hard-luck loser. Minnesota scored the games lone run in the top of the fourth inning as a leadoff walk proved to be the difference. That walk went to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a groundball to first base. A sacrifice fly scored the run. Minnesota starter Brian Bull allowed only one Wildcat runner to reach third base in the game. Kontos was equally as impressive. The junior allowed just two hits and only one runner to reach third base. That runner scored. In the two games, game one starter Dan Brauer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) and Kontos combined to strike out 19 and allow only seven hits in 14 innings pitched. Northwestern and Minnesota scored the least amount of total runs possible in the two contests. A total of four pitchers allowed just 14 hits in the combined 28 innings. The two teams will wrap up the four-game series with a single nine-inning contest Sunday at 1 p.m.
