Wildcats Fall 5-2 in Game Two; Split Four-Game Series
April 9, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana pitching held Northwestern to six hits in a 5-2 loss in game two of Monday's doubleheader. Two of those six hits came in the ninth inning as Hoosier pitching stymied the Wildcat offense all weekend. The win gave IU the doubleheader sweep, one day after Northwestern swept Sunday's doubleheader. Junior designated hitter Antonio Mule ended the game 2-for-4 with an RBI. The loss drops NU to 8-17 overall, 2-5 in the Big Ten. Indiana scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning to start the scoring. An IU runner reached first on a botched sacrifice bunt and moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt. A foul-fly over the shoulder diving catch by Wildcat first baseman Jake Goebbert (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) allowed the runner from third to tag up and score. Northwestern answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. A leadoff walk to Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) went to second on a Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) single. Newman scored when designated hitter Antonio Mule (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) rolled one through the right side of the infield for his first hit of the game. IU recaptured the lead for good in the bottom of the third as errors proved costly again for NU. A leadoff single stole second and went to third on a fly out to right field. A single scored the first Indiana run. A would-be double play groundball was misplayed, leaving runners on first and second with one out. Another single plated the second run of the inning and gave Indiana a 3-2 lead.
Indiana extended its lead to 4-2 off Wildcat starter Cole Livermore (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) in the bottom of the fourth inning. A leadoff single was sacrificed to second and went to third on a groundball to second base. He scored on another single. Livermore pitched his first complete game of the season, striking out four in the process.
The Hoosiers used a pair of two-out hits to score their fifth run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. A two-out double scored on a groundball single up the middle. After scoring in the third inning, Northwestern managed just one hit until the ninth inning. In the ninth, second baseman Caleb Fields (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) and right fielder Max Mann (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) each singled. A pop out and a double play ended the game. Northwestern is back in action when they travel to Peoria, Ill., to take on the Bradley Braves at 7 p.m. The game will be played at O'Brien Field. |
