ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Trevor Stevens extended his season-opening hitting streak to eight straight games, but Northwestern dropped its series-opener at Saint Louis 5-2 Thursday afternoon.

The Billikens got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. With runners at the corners and two outs, a throwing error on a steal of second base allowed the runner from third to come home to score.

Northwestern took the lead right back in the top of the second inning with a two-out rally. Following a single by Nick Linne, fellow freshman Patrick Miller followed by ripping his first collegiate home run to put the Wildcats up 2-1.

However, that would be all the run production that NU would be able to muster. Saint Louis tied the game in the bottom of the third, but Francis Brooke was able to prevent any further damage by stranding the bases loaded.

The Billikens took the lead for good in the top of the fifth. Saint Louis was able to chase Brooke from the game after opening the frame with three singles and a walk. The hosts would tally three times in the inning to take a three-run lead.

Northwestern had baserunners in each of the last four innings, including two in the eighth, but wasn't able to rally. Zack Smith limited the Wildcats to just the two runs while scattering seven hits over seven innings to pick up the win. Brooke suffered the loss, hurling the first four frames.

Stevens and Paul Snieder collected two hits apiece for NU.

The teams resume their series Friday as they play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
