Wildcat Baseball Signs Five to Letters of Intent
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head baseball coach Paul Stevens announced today the signing of five players to national letters of intent to play baseball at NU beginning in the 1998-99 school year: Ryan Bos (Barrington, Ill./Lake Zurich), Todd Morgan (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka), Gabe Ribas (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick), Zach Schara (Madison, Wis./West) and Matt Thompson (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville).
Bos hit .322 with two homers and 14 RBIs last season. The first baseman/pitcher also pitched 26 innings last season, with an ERA of 4.58. He was team co-captain as a junior and named all-conference at Lake Zurich. The 6'5" Bos also is the leading receiver for Lake Zurich's football team with 22 receptions this season. He chose Northwestern over Illinois, Duke and Clemson.
Morgan hit .354 with one home run and 43 RBIs last year for Minnetonka High School. The second baseman/shortstop also stole 27 bases in 30 attempts, and drew 26 walks on the season. Morgan chose Northwestern over Stanford, Pepperdine and Cornell.
Ribas is a right-handed pitcher who compiled a 3-6 record with a 1.92 ERA last year. The first-team all-conference honoree struck out 88 batters while walking just 16 in 56 innings. Ribas chose Northwestern over Michigan, North Carolina and Dartmouth.
Schara is a right-handed pitcher who also can play the outfield. As a sophomore, he compiled a 6-2 record with a 2.35 ERA. He fanned 57 batters while walking 17 in just 46 innings. Schara also is the starting quarterback for the Madison West football team. He chose Northwestern over Arizona State, Cal-State Fullerton and Wichita State.
Thompson is a first baseman/outfielder who hit .358 with two homers and 31 RBIs for Libertyville. He is the brother of current Wildcat sophomore first baseman/DH Patrick Thompson, and chose Northwestern over Illinois, Iowa and Northern Illinois.
