EVANSTON, Ill. - A number of Northwestern student-athletes were out in the community this week, taking part in Read Across Evanston. Wildcats from the men's basketball and football teams visited four different elementary schools throughout the area and interacted with more than 1,500 children.

"The growth of Read Across Evanston the last three years has been fantastic," NU Assistant Athletic Director for Community Relations Maureen Palchak said. " Our student-athletes love interacting with the kids. They have a great time while encouraging reading, doing homework and being prepared among other lessons that I hear from the teachers that they really appreciate. The response we have received from schools has been incredibly supportive and we look forward to continuing this program and visiting numerous other schools in the Evanston area."

As part of 'Kits and 'Cats Week - Go Wild!, the Wildcats read books selected by the school and then spoke about the importance of reading and other topics such as sportsmanship during their visits. Each school had a different format for the program, which was individualized per the school curriculum.

Washington, Willard, Lincoln and Oakton were the four elementary schools the Wildcats visited this week and each student received a "Read With the 'Cats" bookmark. The bookmark has a football field pictured on it and each book the students read counts as a first down. Once the student reaches 10 first downs, they score a touchdown and can bring their bookmark to any Northwestern sporting event (*excluding football and men's basketball) to receive FREE admission.

Now in its third year, Read Across Evanston is a program that was created by the NU Athletics Community Relations Program, 'Cats Give Back. It is an opportunity for student-athletes to visit with young people, and have some fun while encouraging reading and the importance of education.
