EVANSTON -- LifeSource, Illinois's largest blood center, and Northwestern, Chicago's Big Ten Team TM , have combined to support more than 1,100 lives since the inception of the Purple Pride Blood Drives during the 2012-13 academic year.

During the first year of the program, LifeSource collected 261 units of blood, which was able to help support more than 780 lives in the Chicago area. The Wildcats are looking to surpass that mark this year and the collection is off to a great start. The first two-day Purple Pride Blood Drive of 2013-14 took place in August and another 116 units were collected, supporting close to 350 additional lives.

Carlos Picasso of Evanston is an ardent NU supporter who rolled up his sleeves and donated at Ryan Field in August. For his effort, Picasso was chosen as the September Donor of the Month. The PhD student in biomedical engineering relishes the opportunity to help others in need through blood and the strength, courage and hope he provides patients in their time of need.

"I have always liked helping people in need and donating blood [is] a very easy way of doing it," said Picasso. "People usually assume that someone else is going to do it, but I've learned that there are [still] blood shortages. It's a painless procedure that takes less than one hour and can save lives."

Picasso, a native of Argentina, has been donating blood since he was a teenager. At the Purple Pride Blood Drive, he went above and beyond the call and donated double red blood cells, as well.

"The Purple Pride Blood Drive is a great opportunity for Wildcats fans, like Carlos, and all local residents to support lives while taking advantage of the various incentives offered by Northwestern Athletics," said Maureen Palchak, Assistant Athletic Director, Community Relations. "We are all very excited to continue working with our partner, LifeSource, to enhance these blood drives and support the Chicagoland community."

Mark your calendars now for the next installment of the Purple Pride Blood Drive. The drive will take place on Monday, Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. inside the stadium club high atop the gridiron at Ryan Field. As always, there are plenty of tremendous incentives for donating blood. All registered donors will receive the opportunity to be chosen for the Donor of Month program and be honored during the football game against Michigan State on Nov. 23. Donors will also be entered for the chance to win tickets to see the Wildcats in a bowl game and get autographs from former NU standouts.
