'Cats Cruise Past UIC in Midweek Matchup

Evanston, IL - Northwestern's bats were the story on Tuesday afternoon, as the 'Cats put together a dominant 13-3 win against UIC.

A trio of home runs from Ruben Fontes, Jay Beshears and Tommy D'Alise helped lead Northwestern (12-12, 2-1) on offense, as the 'Cats scored at least ten runs for the ninth time this season. Beshears went 3-5 and finished a triple shy of the cycle.

Ruben Fontes also dominated at the plate, hitting .750 against UIC and launching a tower home run off of Welsh-Ryan Arena beyond the right field wall. The Davidson transfer finished the afternoon with 3 RBIs. Patrick Herrera also impressed with a pair of RBIs on a 2-4 day.

The Flames struggled to spark their offense against Northwestern's starting pitcher Jacob Scharm. In his first college start, Scharm struck out 3 through five shut out innings against UIC.

Northwestern will have momentum heading into their first Big Ten home series of the season.

Coming off their first series win over Indiana since 2006, the Wildcats will look to build on a 2-1 start to conference play that has them sitting in sixth place in the Big Ten. Northwestern will welcome Penn State (10-15, 2-4) to Evanston for a three-game weekend series at Rocky & Berenice Miller Park.
