EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern senior guard Bryant McIntosh is one of 30 men's basketball student-athletes selected Thursday as a candidate for the 2017-18 Senior CLASS Award®. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
McIntosh, who is the lone candidate from the Big Ten Conference, is an Academic All-Big Ten honoree who has helped the program earn the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award in back-to-back seasons.
A leader on and off the court, McIntosh has twice been named a captain by his coaches and teammates and was invited to be a counselor at the elite Stephen Curry's SC30 Select Summer Camp on two occasions.
The Greensburg, Indiana, native has placed an emphasis on giving back to the community during his time in Evanston. McIntosh annually raises funds and participates in Northwestern's Relay For Life event. He has also volunteered at Misericordia Candy Days, raising money for an adult/youth home where residents have physical and mental disabilities. He is active at Northwestern's Kits, 'Cats and Kids Block Party, spending time with local youth and has made multiple visits to a youth correctional facility to speak and mentor inmates.
On the court, McIntosh is one of the best to have ever worn the Northwestern uniform. The program's all-time leader in assists, he was a unanimous 2017-18 preseason All-Big Ten selection and was one of 20 guards named to the Bob Cousy Award watch list. He is the only Big Ten player over the last 25 years to post 1,340 points and 550 assists through his first three collegiate seasons and is one of only 15 players in league history to reach both of those standards in a career. In 15 games this season, McIntosh ranks second on the team with 13.3 points per game, while averaging a team-best 5.5 assists and boasts a 96.7 percent mark from the charity stripe.
The candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men's Final Four® and NCAA Women's Final Four® this spring. For more information on each of the candidates and to view the full list, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
