Wu Advances to U.S. Amateur Match Play

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Senior Dylan Wu qualified for match play in the 117th U.S. Amateur Championship after shooting 3-over 143 (71-72) in stroke play competition.

Out of 312 entrants to the prestigious competition, only 64 advance to the rigorous, five-day match play portion. Wu finished tied for 49th.
Wu will face off against Patrick Cover, a senior at UNCW, at 2 p.m. CT at the Riviera Country Club.
A reigning Second Team All-American, Wu found much more success in the back nines of both of his stroke play rounds.
He started his first round at the Bel-Air Country Club in shaky position, making four bogeys in his first six holes. Despite entering his back nine 4-over, he quickly rebounded on his 11th hole of the day, making birdie. He punctuated his round with eagle on his penultimate hole to finish round one with a 1-over 71.
Needing to play solid golf at Riviera Country Club to finish under the cutline in the second round, Wu once again started slow, making five bogeys on the front nine. He kicked it into high gear after hole 10 with back-to-back birdies. A bogey on 12 was followed up by another birdie on 13. He finished with two more birdies on 16 and 17, and he finished his round with a 2-over 72.
This is Wu's second trip to the U.S. Amateur (also in 2015), and his first time making it to match play. He is the first Wildcat golfer to advance to match play since then-incoming freshman Matthew Fitzpatrick advanced in 2013, and he went on to win the event.
After the Round of 64 on Wednesday, there will be two match play rounds on Thursday to get to the quarterfinals. Play will continue with one round a day until Sunday for the 36-hole final round.
Fox Sports 1 will air coverage of the round of 64 beginning at 4 p.m. CT on Wednesday, and at 5 p.m. CT Thursday and Friday. The semifinals and championship match will air on Fox, at 11 a.m. CT Saturday and at 3:30 p.m. CT Sunday, respectively.
