EVANSTON, Ill. – Led by nine teams with perfect scores, ten Wildcats varsity programs own the nation's top Academic Progress Rate (APR) in their respective sports, according to data released Wednesday by the NCAA.
"These programs achieve at a high level year-after-year because our coaches recruit student-athletes that want to be elite in the classroom," said Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips. "Our young men and women are here to earn the best degree in college athletics, and continue to make Northwestern proud academically, socially and athletically."
Northwestern's baseball, field hockey, women's golf, softball, men's & women's soccer, women's basketball, cross country and volleyball teams posted perfect 1,000 multi-year rates for the current cohort. Men's soccer was the only Big Ten program with a perfect mark, while field hockey, women's soccer and women's basketball were each one of only two Big Ten schools to post unblemished multi-year scores.
Wildcats football (995) posted the No. 1 rate in the nation among all FBS schools. The Northwestern football program has ranked first or second among FBS institutions for seven consecutive years.
Last week, those ten Northwestern varsity programs were awarded APR Public Recognition Awards for placing in the top-10 percent of their respective sports in the latest multi-year APR scores. For the sixth straight year, more than half of Northwestern's 19 varsity programs received the honor. Wildcats men's soccer, women's golf and volleyball are among an elite group of 93 teams from across the country that have received the Public Recognition Award in each of the 12 years of the program.
The APR multi-year rates span the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years. This year 15 of 19 Wildcats teams exceeded a 990 scores, and all 19 Northwestern varsity programs earned a score of 980 or better.
