EVANSTON, Ill. --
Fresh off its first win in NCAA tournament history, the Northwestern men's basketball team vies for a berth in the Sweet 16 Saturday when the eighth-seeded Wildcats take on top-seeded Gonzaga. Tip time is set for approximately 4:15 p.m. Central time.

Northwestern and Gonzaga will be meeting for the first time Saturday.

The Wildcats are looking to become just the second team all-time to defeat a No. 1 seed in their inaugural NCAA tournament appearance. Georgia defeated top-seeded St. John's in its tournament debut in 1983.

Northwestern and Gonzaga have two common opponents this season. NU beat Bryant 86-66 while Gonzaga notched a 109-70 victory. Both teams also defeated Mississippi Valley State: NU won 94-63; GU won 97-63.

The Wildcats are coming off a 68-66 win over ninth-seeded Vanderbilt in Thursday's first round. Bryant McIntosh scored a game-high 25 points, including hitting the go-ahead free throws with just under 15 seconds remaining. McIntosh's point total matched his season high. Junior guard Scottie Lindsey scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half for the Wildcats. He has scored at least 14 points in each of the last four contests.

The Wildcats shot 49.1 percent (26-53) from the field against Vanderbilt. Northwestern has shot 45 percent or better in five of its last six games.

Northwestern's 10 victories away from home this season (five road, five neutral) match the school record, equaling the total of the 1943-44 squad.
