Big Ten Announces Pre-Seeds for 2017 Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. – Six Northwestern wrestlers are pre-seeded for the 2017 Big Ten Championships, the conference announced Monday. The 2017 Championships will be held Saturday and Sunday at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind.
 
Jacob Berkowitz (No. 6 at 197 lbs.), Mitch Sliga (No. 9 at 184 lbs.), Alec McKenna (No. 10 at 141 lbs.), Jason Ipsarides (No. 11 at 133 lbs.), Ben Sullivan (No. 14 at 157 lbs.) and Braxton Cody (No. 14 at 174 lbs.) are listed by the conference based on the number of automatic bids to the NCAA Championships at each weight.
 
The Big Ten has nine automatic spots at 133, 141, 157, 174 and 184, seven bids at 125, 165 and 197, six spots at 149 and five automatic placements at 285.
 
Berkowitz is Northwestern's highest pre-seeded wrestler at No. 6. The redshirt senior posted a team-best 22-7 record, along with 12 dual wins, while wrestling at 197 lbs. He enters the championships riding a three-match win streak and has won six of his last eight overall.
 
Berkowitz recorded wins over No. 9 Brett Harner (Princeton) and No. 15 Malik McDonald (North Carolina State) at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in December.
 
Sliga, a redshirt junior wrestling at 184 lbs., is pre-seeded in the ninth slot after posting a career-best 16-8 overall record and 10-5 mark in dual matches.
 
Ipsarides, a redshirt freshman from Cedarburg, Wis., recorded eight dual wins in 15 matches and posted a 10-11 record overall.
 
Northwestern will also have Anthony Rubinetti (125), Shayne Oster (149), Johnny Sebastian (165) and Conan Jennings (285) competing.
 
Official seeds and brackets will be released Friday, March 3.
 
The Big Ten Championships begin Saturday, March 4, at 10 a.m. from Indiana University and wrap up Sunday, March 5, with the finals at 3 p.m.
