EVANSTON, Ill. —
The Northwestern men's and women's swimming and diving programs put an exclamation point on an impressive weekend by sweeping the 2017 TYR Invitational at the Norris Aquatics Center.

The women's side ran away from the competition with a final team score of 1,190 points, finishing 485 points in front of second-place Michigan State. The men entered Sunday with the lead and used a strong performance to secure a championship with 890 points. The Spartans also finished second on the men's side with a team score of 867.

Sophomore Nicole Aarts set the tone for the Wildcats in Sunday morning's prelims by claiming the top seed in the 200 back with a career-best time. Earning a NCAA 'B' cut wasn't enough for the sophomore however as she came back in the afternoon and finished with another career-best, touching the wall in 1:56.29 to finish second.

The finals opened Sunday afternoon with a 1-2 finish in the mile by sophomore Irune Andres and Sydney Modeas. Andres picked up her pace in the latter half of the race and pulled away from the field with a career-best 16:42.30, while Modeas used a strong kick as well to take over second and finish in 16:48.89.

First-year Calypso Sheridan continued her stellar start to her career in the Purple, winning back-to-back events in the 200 breast and 100 individual medley. Sheridan swam away from the competition in the 200 breast, breaking an 11-year pool record and earning a NCAA 'B' cut with 2:11.38. She claimed the 100 IM by nearly three seconds with 54.87.

Fellow first-year Becky Kamau also claimed a NCAA 'B' cut in the 200 breast with a 2:15.29 to finish fourth and dove right back in the pool to finish second behind Sheridan in the 100 IM with a time of 57.49.

The Class of 2021 continued to impress with a second-place finish by Ilektra Lebl in the 200 fly. Junior Alex Grimes also qualified for the championship final in the 200 fly and finished fourth.

Senior Anna Keane led the 400 free relay team off and the 'Cats never looked back in the final event of the night. Keane combined with sophomores Krystal Lara and Malorie Han and classmate Mary Warren to pick up the 'Cats sixth and final win of the day with a 3:21.31.

Juniors Olivia Rosendahl and Erynn Scanell wrapped up their weekends with another 1-2 finish in the Platform Sunday. Rosendahl claimed her signature event with a 253.95, while Scannell finished second with a 184.43. First year Sarah Gardner scored 15 points for the 'Cats with a fourth-place finish.

While the men didn't finish atop the leaderboard in any individual events Sunday, it was their depth in championship finals that helped them secure their title. The 'Cats put 13 men in the 'A Finals' with a strong performance in the morning prelims.

Juniors Arjun Shurma and Ryan Tate got things going for the men with third and fourth place finishes in the 50 fly. Fellow juniors Tyler Lis and Jack Thorne also finished third and fourth in the 200 backstroke. Senior Alex Snarski also qualified for the 'A' final in the 200 backstroke, finishing sixth.

Tate continued to rack up points for the 'Cats with a fifth-place finish in the 100 free, touching the wall in 45.24. The junior also led off the Wildcats' 400 free relay team that finished third in 3:01.78.

First year D.J. Hwang went back and forth with Michigan State's Guy Moskovich in the 1,650 free and even held the lead halfway through the race, but Moskovich used a strong kick down the stretch to pull away. Hwang finished second and earned a NCAA 'B' cut with a 15:26.09.

Junior Justin Hanson picked up a runner-up finish in the 200 fly with a time of 1:49.22.

Fellow first year Lyon Zhang earned a fourth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:03.53 and junior Wil Hofstadter finished fifth in the event.

The Wildcats qualified three men in the 'A' final of the 100 yard IM and junior Tyler Lis led the trio with a fourth-place finish. Snarski and first-year Jeffrey Durmer finished seventh and eighth.

Northwestern's women's program will be back in action on December 17 when it takes on Florida Gulf Coast while the men are off from competition until January 13 when they will battle SMU.
