EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior guard Bryant McIntosh is one of 20 individuals named to the watch list for the 2018 Bob Cousy Award presented to the nation's top point guard as announced Monday by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
A native of Greensburg, Indiana, McIntosh already is Northwestern's all-time leader in assists with 551 through his first three seasons. The total is the highest of any active player in the nation.
A year ago, McIntosh averaged 5.4 assists per game in Big Ten play making him the first Northwestern player to lead the league in the category.
A consensus second-team All-Big Ten selection a year ago, McIntosh paced the team with an average of 14.8 points per game in 2016-17 while leading the Wildcats to a school-record 24 wins and the team's first NCAA tournament appearance and victory in school history. Additionally, he was named to all-district teams by both the USBWA and the NABC.
McIntosh has handed out 10 or more assists in a game five times in his career, something no other Wildcat has done more than twice. His 213 assists as a sophomore in 2015-16 are a Northwestern single-season record, easily eclipsing the previous mark of 157 set by Tim Doyle in 2006-07.
McIntosh enters his senior season ranked 15th in school history with 1,341 career points and second with a career .851 free throw percentage.
Named after Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy, the annual honor now in its 15th year recognizes the top point guards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2018 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Cousy and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2018 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 6, 2018. Broadcast information will be released at a later date.
Northwestern opens its 2017-18 season Nov. 10 when it takes on Loyola (Md.) at Allstate Arena in Rosemont. Tickets are available at NUsports.com or by calling 888-GO-PURPLE.
Fans can get their first glimpse at this season's Wildcats this Friday with the Purple/White Scrimmage at Allstate Arena. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the scrimmage set to get underway at 7 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
