EVANSTON, Ill.—Sophomore Hannah Davison netted her first goal of the season as No. 24 Northwestern defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles, 1-0, on Sunday evening at Lanny & Sharon Martin Stadium.
The Wildcats finished their non-conference schedule at a perfect 7-0-0, the only Big Ten team to do so, while Marquette drops to 2-4-2 on the year.
It was a tense, up and down in the opening thirty minutes, with sophomore Brenna Lovera coming closest when her 32nd-minute shot hit side netting. The frenetic pace brought frequent fouls, with eight in the first half as possession oscillated between the boxes.
Outshooting the Golden Eagles, 9-2, the Wildcats were able to break the deadlock in the 43rd minute when Mary Erikson's left sided free kick was met far post by a leaping Davison, who headed across the goal and in. This marked the third straight game Northwestern entered the break with a 1-0 lead.
Lovera continued to pester the Marquette back four in the second half, finding opportunity in 62nd minute as the ball fell to her at the top of the box to force a diving save. Two minutes later, her right-side run ended in another shot on frame, and her glancing header in the 72nd required a third full-extension save.
Goalkeeper Lauren Clem was not forced to make a save until the 69th minute. The Golden Eagles threatened most on corners, but Clem's leaping catch on a 75th-minute header preserved the #B1GCats goal advantage.
Marquette had a chance to draw level with a free kick from 25-yards out with two and a half minutes remaining in regulation, but Clem was able to palm the ball on the goal line.
Clem and the Wildcats have not conceded a goal for 446 minutes, a stretch dating back to the 2-1 win over DePaul on Aug 25, and have recorded six shutouts in seven games.
Chicago's Big Ten Team stay's at home for its next two matchups, next opening Big Ten action against Indiana on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m., before wrapping up the home stand at 3 p.m. on the Sept. 18 against Purdue.
