EVANSTON, Ill. -- On the heels of a record-tying 10-win season, the Wildcats returned to the football field Tuesday for the first time since New Year's Day to kick off the spring practice season inside the Trienens Hall fieldhouse. Northwestern will conduct eight more practices over the next three weeks, take a two-week break for final exams and spring break, and return for six more sessions from March 29 through April 9.
Tuesday's practice saw a number of Wildcats in different positions than those occupied at the conclusion of the 2015 regular-season. Solomon Vault has transitioned to wide receiver from running back, and is joined in the wide receiver group by a pair of former defensive backs, Marcus McShepard and Steven Reese. Ben Oxley also switched from a black jersey (defense) to a white jersey (offense), making the change from defensive line to offensive line.
Head coach Pat Fitzgerald announced that Reese, quarterback Matt Alviti, defensive lineman Tommy Carnifax, running back Warren Long, offensive lineman Eric Olson, are expected to miss all of spring ball while recovering from surgery completed after the season.
