Junior Nia Coffey has been selected to the John R. Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 List. The outstanding student-athletes listed are the frontrunners for one of college basketball's most prestigious individual honors at roughly two-thirds of the way through the 2015-16 season. The list is chosen by a poll of national women's college basketball media members and was announced
Coffey also appeared on the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top-30 and Midseason Top-20 List.
Coffey, a co-captain for the Wildcats, tallied her 1,000th-career point in the 'Cats season-opening win over Howard. The junior became the second active Wildcat to accomplish the feat. So far this year, Coffey has recorded 15 20+ point performances, including a season-high 29 points against Indiana on Jan. 24. Coffey has scored in double figures in 41-straight games, dating back to Jan. 22, 2015, for the fourth-best streak in program history and is averaging a team-best 20.0 points per game. She sits tied for first in the Big Ten in double-doubles with 14 and is one of just two players in the conference averaging double digit points and rebounds.
The Minneapolis, Minnesota, native, is just one of three current DI players with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds along with Brittany Martin of Oklahoma State and Nathalie Fontaine of Ball State.
The John R. Wooden Award® final ballot will consist of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and are maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA. The Wooden Award All-American Team, consisting of the nation's top five players, will be announced the week of the Final Four.
The John R. Wooden Award will be the anchor presentation of the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy's. The men's and women's John R. Wooden All-American Teams will be honored during the ceremony, as well as the 2016 Legends of Coaching Award™, which will be presented to Tubby Smith, Head Men's Basketball Coach at Texas Tech.
