EVANSTON, Ill.— Northwestern was deadlocked with Nebraska, 0-0, after 110 minutes of action in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 Big Ten Tournament on Sunday at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium, but will advance to the semifinals after rallying through to win the shootout, 4-3.
The freshly anointed Big Ten Regular-Season Champions saw a flurry of activity as the game burst to life in the first 25 minutes. Junior Kim Jerantowski broke down the right wing and maneuvered into the box, but her cross was deflected over the end line. The ensuing corner bounced around the box, before Mehta launched a header on frame where it was saved. A minute later, Nebraska had a two-on-one with the Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year Lauren Clem in the box, but that action was just a flash in the pan as both defenses showcased strong performances in the first half.
The last time the Wildcats ended a regular season undefeated at home was 1998, but this year's edition was looking to do something that squad could not – win a Big Ten tournament game. Junior Maria Fayeulle put an effort wide early in the half, while Kassidy Gorman's 76th minute volley forced a save. Clem made a big diving save, using her whole reach to palm a ball to her left in the 69th minute of action.
This was the second time in two weeks that Nebraska and Northwestern entered overtime scoreless, but this time, the winner would be heading to the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals. Senior Rachel Zampa almost put the game away 45 seconds into overtime, but her header missed by inches. It proved to be the best chance of extra time as the teams headed to penalty kicks just 20 minutes later.
As the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament, Minnesota will host the semifinals (Nov. 6) and finals (Nov. 8) at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Northwestern will take on Rutgers, while Michigan and Minnesota face off in the other semifinal match.
