Northwestern Fencing Takes on Elite Talent at NAC

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Northwestern Fencing Team sent 19 fencers to compete at the January North American Cup in St. Louis this past weekend against elite talent from all over the country.
The Wildcats had a strong showing in the Women's Epee weapon group, with Juliana Barrett and Courtney Dumas both achieving top-40 finishes. Dumas finished 6-2 while Barrett won two knockout round matches en route to a 26th place finish and a 7-2 record.
Katie Van Riper and Ella Lombard fenced in the Junior Women's Epee group and also made it to the Division 1 Women's Epee group where Van Riper won three matches.
The Wildcats sent nine fencers to the Div 1 Women's Foil group with Stephanie Chan leading the way with a 40th place finish and a knockout round victory. The young Northwestern talent was also on display, with Sharon Chen, Lucia Procopio, Michelle Lee, and Stefani Kahookele all appearing in the D-1 group after fencing in the Junior Women's Foil.
Sacha Bazzal earned five wins in the Women's Sabre weapon group including a knockout round victory. She was one of three Wildcats in the group.
The Fencing Team will be in action again on Sunday, Jan. 17 at the Western Invitational in San Diego.
