Wildcats Blanked by Indiana at Toyota Park, 1-0
9/27/2015 5:15:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Northwestern was unable to shake a slow first-half start Sunday afternoon and as a result never found their rhythm offensively in suffering their second-straight shutout in Big Ten play as they fell to Indiana, 1-0.
"The first half, they were the better team for sure," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "We couldn't connect anything to keep the ball in their end. If you do that long enough, eventually something bad is going to happen."
"We talked at halftime, we have to put them under pressure. Otherwise we're going to be defending the whole time. The way you put them under pressure is that you connect your passes in your half of the field. But we did a much better job of that in the second half."
The Wildcats took just two shots in the first half, while four of the Hoosiers' six first-half shots were on goal.
Junior Jeffrey Hopson had the best chance of the first half for the 'Cats when senior Cole Missimo found him in the middle of the box in the 8th minute, but his shot attempt went wide. IU nearly scored 11 minutes later on a header by Billy McConnell, but senior defender Nati Schnitman made a defensive save at the goalline with goalkeeper Zak Allen out of position to prevent the goal.
Unfortunately, the 'Cats were not able to keep the sheet clean as IU took a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute. Tanner Thompson found Andrew Gutman on the left wing of the 18-yard box for a shot that fired past Allen into the top right corner of the goal.
The Wildcats played were able to find some opportunities in the second half, taking 10 shots and putting a pair on goal. A header from sophomore Elo Ozumba nearly tied things up in the 86th minute and Hopson took a shot on a free kick from just outside the box two minutes later, but to no avail.
"I thought we defended pretty well — I mean, this is a good team, this is Indiana — but we couldn't get one back," Said Lenahan.
The Wildcats are back in action next Friday when they travell to College Park, Maryland for a conference match against Maryland.
