Wildcats Win Second Straight with 1-0 Shutout of UCF

9/14/2015 9:13:00 PM | Men's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. — Freshman Jake Roberge scored his first career goal and senior Zak Allen posted his second career shutout as Northwestern defeated UCF for its second-straight win Monday night, 1-0.,

The Wildcats (2-2-1) managed just three shots on goal, but Roberge's header in the 81st minute proved to be all they would need to come away victorious. Senior Joey Calistri, who scored two goals in the 'Cats' 2-1 win over Ohio State three days ago, was credited with an assist on the play as was sophomore Sam Forsgren.

"It wasn't the most pretty of games," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "I thought our legs were a little heavy from Friday night. Early in the season having to play games with only a couple days rest, I thought we were a little bit heavy, especially in the midfield. A lot of times in this midweek games you need to go to the bench and find somebody. Jake Roberge did a great job defending, winning head balls and really got after a ball at the near post. We made the play, they didn't. We'll take our 1-nothing shutout, get a couple days rest and prepare for Michigan."

Getting His Feet Wet
Freshman Jake Roberge played just 33 minutes on Monday night, but his aggressiveness and ability to win headers in the midfield gave head coach Tim Lenahan the opportunity to start the first-year Wildcat in the second half. Roberge came through when the 'Cats needed him most by scoring the first goal of his career.,

Senior Cole Missimo played a ball to Forsgren who flicked it to Calistri. The senior then beat his defender and attacked the right post only to chip it in front of the goal and find the head of Roberge for the game-winning goal.

The Engine That Drives the Bus
The Wildcats were held scoreless in a pair of games on the west coast versus Seattle and Gonzaga, but since returning to Chicagoland seniors Joey Calistri and Cole Missimo have sparked the offense. Missimo had a pair of assists in the Wildcats' 2-1 win over Ohio State and started the attack that led to the game-winning goal. Calistri has five points in the last two games, scoring a pair of goals and dishing out one assist.,

"We're probably going to go as they go," Lenahan said. "Cole made a play to get us started and Joey got the assist. The last three goals we have scored, Joey and Cole were involved in them all. They are certainly the engine that drives the bus for us so them being productive we're going to have a chance to win some games.",

Allen Picks Up Second Career Shutout
Senior and Chicago native Zak Allen posted his second career shutout, but the first in which the Wildcats posted a victory. Despite 15 shots by the Knights, just four were on goal and Allen stopped each and everyone one.,

"It's his first shutout where we won the game," Lenahan said. "He got a shutout in his first-ever game a couple years ago when Tyler was hurt. It's great to get a shutout. Great to have zeroes on the board. I thought we defended pretty well. They had some chances, but mostly from distance. I thought we protected from the top of the 18 in pretty well today so I was happy with that."

Next Up
The Wildcats will look to improve to 2-0 in Big Ten play when they travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan to battle the Wolverines. Michigan drew with Maryland in its Big Ten opener and is currently 2-1-1 overall on the year.
