Demps, Olah and Lumpkin to lead Wildcats during upcoming campaign
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head men's basketball coach Chris Collins has announced that redshirt senior Tre Demps, senior Alex Olah and redshirt junior Sanjay Lumpkin will serve as team tri-captains for the upcoming 2015-16 season.
"We're honored to have Tre, Alex and Sanjay be our captains this year," Collins said. "They have done a tremendous job with leadership on and off the court. They'll serve as excellent leaders for our team going into the season."
Demps, a native of San Antonio, Texas, has appeared in 100 career games, including making 41 starts. He was the team's leading scorer a year ago when he averaged 12.5 points per contest to earn honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition. Demps was at his best late in the season, averaging 16.0 points per game over the team's last eight regular-season contests. He has scored 1,017 career points and enters his final season ranked ninth in school history with 139 career 3-point field goals.
A native of Timisoara, Romania, Olah has started 93 of the 96 contests that he has appeared in during his time at Northwestern. He already comes into his senior season as the Wildcats' all-time leader in blocked shots with 145. Olah averaged career bests of 11.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game as a junior, including recording seven double-doubles and 10 double-figure rebounding games en route to being named and honorable mention All-Big Ten pick.
Lumpkin has seen action in 69 career contests while making 58 starts during his first two-plus seasons with the Wildcats. The Wayzata, Minnesota, native has established himself as one of the top defenders in the Big Ten, leading Northwestern in steals in each of his first two full seasons with the squad. A year ago, he posted an impressive .526 field goal percentage while recording averages of 4.3 points and 3.8 points per game.
Northwestern is set to return all five starters and eight letterwinners overall from last year's squad. The Wildcats will embark on a tour of Spain from August 22 through September 1 where they will play five exhibition games. More details on the trip are forthcoming.
