EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern head baseball coach Spencer Allen has announced the addition of Dusty Napoleon as an assistant coach for the Wildcats on Monday, July 6.
"It is a pleasure to welcome Dusty Napoleon to the Northwestern baseball family," said Allen. "His overall knowledge of the game is second to none, and combined with an ability to teach and relate to players makes him an ideal fit. As a player, he worked hard to rise up the professional ranks and I know he will bring that same work ethic and drive here to Northwestern.
"This is a homecoming for Dusty, as both him and his wife Mary are from the area," added Allen.
"I am extremely excited to join the Northwestern baseball program," said Napoleon. "Having the opportunity to work with Coach Allen at Northwestern is a dream come true for me and my family. Growing up in the area, I have had Northwestern on my radar for a long time and I am very familiar with the academic excellence that the university brings.
"I am excited to return to the Big Ten to compete in one of the best conferences in the country," said Napoleon. "I truly look forward to recruiting and developing student-athletes to have success both on and off the field."
Napoleon joins the 'Cats after serving as an assistant coach at Concordia University in River Forest, Ill., since 2014. There, he worked with the hitters and catchers as he helped the Cougars win 33 games overall, including a triumph over the defending Division III national champions, UW-Whitewater in the NCAA Midwest Regional. The team won 24 of its final 28 games over the final six weeks.
Prior to arriving at CUC, Napoleon worked as an assistant at Western Illinois University. He has also spent time on the bench at North Park University and Iowa, his alma mater.
"I want to thank Adam Smith, Ryan Brownlee, and Jack Dahm for their guidance over the last four years," said Napoleon. "Each gave me an opportunity to pursue my coaching career and I have learned a lot from each one. I can't wait to start working with Coach Allen and the rest of the Northwestern staff."
Napoleon played for the Hawkeyes as a three-year starter from 2005-07. In 2007, he led the team in on-base percentage, walks and RBI's. His 32 walks in conference play that spring set a Big Ten record that stands to this day.
Following the 2007 campaign, Napoleon was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 19th round of the Major League Baseball Draft. He ascended through all four levels of Minor League Baseball as he played with the Sacramento River Kings of the Pacific Coast League. In 2009, Napoleon won the Oakland Athletics Community Service Award.
Napoleon and his wife, Mary, reside in Chicago.
