EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern senior Garrison White and junior Jason Tsirtsis advanced to the quarterfinals at the 53rd annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships during Session I Tuesday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
White had one of the most dominant showings of any wrestler in the first session, outscoring his two opponents 33-0. He started the day by beating Joe Antonelli (SIU-Edwardsville) 16-0 before a 17-0 tech fall of Ares Carpio (Arizona State).
"Garrison is off to a great start this tournament," interim head coach Matt Storniolo said. "He is wrestling with an attitude and putting a lot of points on the board."
White improved to 9-3 this season and is in the midst of a seven-match winning streak with four of those by bonus point decisions.
He will wrestle the No. 2 seed Ronnie Rios of Oregon State in the nightcap.
The Wildcats' other quarterfinalist, Tsirtsis, entered the Midlands with only two matches under his belt in 2015 but looked sharp in the early going, registering an 18-2 tech fall in his first match against Bradford Gerl from Cal Baptist. He followed that with a 4-3 decision over Northern Iowa's unattached Max Thomsen.
The second-seeded Tsirtsis is now 3-1 on the year and will face No. 7 seed Gabe Moreno of Iowa State in Session II.
Chicago's Big Ten Team has nine wrestlers still alive with seven making their way through the consolation brackets of their respective weight classes.
Dominick Malone (1-1), Luke Norland (2-1), Mitch Sliga (1-1), Regis Durbin (2-1), Jacob Berkowitz (1-1), Conan Jennings (2-1) and Zack Chakonis (unattached, 1-1) will all try to keep their placing hopes alive with matches tonight.
"We lost a few close matches in the first session and those sting," said Storniolo. "For the most part, the team is competing well, and it is time for the guys to refocus and set their sites on third place."
Session II begins at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live courtesy of TrackWrestling and BTN2Go.
