Winsnes, Grimes Collect Big Ten Weekly Honors

EVANSTON, Ill. — Fresh off a Wildcat victory at the FAU FUN Invite, a pair of Northwestern swimmers earned Big Ten weekly honors, the conference announced today.
Annika Winsnes (Singapore/United World College) won the Swimmer of the Week award, while Alex Grimes (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) took home the Freshman of the Week honors. This is both of their first Big Ten weekly honors.
Saturday at FAU, Winsnes took home first-place finishes in every event she participated in: 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, and the 200 free relay. She is the fastest Wildcat this season in the 100 free and 200 free and she is the only NU swimmer to record 'B' cuts in both of those events. She has already broken a pair of Norris Aquatics Center pool records in the 100 free and the 400 medley relay.
Winsnes' Swimmer of the Week nod is the first one for NU since 2010.
Grimes took part in a pair of individual events and a pair of relays at FAU. She collected a first-place finish in the reverse 100 IM, ending with the butterfly stroke, and she also recorded a third-place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 57.74. On the relay front, her group finished in third place in both the 100 medley relay and the 200 free relay. This season, Grimes is the second-fastest 'Cat in the 100 fly with her time of 55.49 at the TYR Invitational (11/21).
Winsnes and Grimes join Olivia Rosendahl (Los Angeles, Calif./Immaculate Heart) as Northwestern swimmers and divers to earn Big Ten weekly honors this season.
The Wildcats' next event is at Notre Dame on January 16th, with a start time of 11 a.m. CT.
