As Northwestern heads into Big Ten competition, NUsports.com caught up with Jameson Oster to learn a little bit about the 141 lbs. senior. Oster is off to a 6-2 start this year and is trying to qualify for the NCAA championships for the second straight season. Oster shares a little bit about his time at Northwestern, what it is like coming from a big wrestling family and more in this edition of "Getting to Know."
NUsports: Why did you choose Northwestern?
Jameson Oster: "I chose Northwestern because of the mix of academics, athletics, the coaching staff and being able to stay close to home."
What are the emotions like of wrestling your final season at NU?
"It is definitely a weird feeling knowing that after 16 years of competing in wrestling that this is going to be my last. But I know that I am putting everything on the line."
Describe what it is like coming from such a wrestling-oriented family.
"It is awesome coming from a family that is so involved in the sport that you love. Having been coached by my Dad as a kid and my brother during high school was an awesome experience. They understand the sacrifices that need to be made for wrestling and are able to support me in a bunch of different ways."
Your brother just committed to wrestle at Northwestern. What does that mean to you?
"It is awesome knowing that he is coming to wrestle for NU. I think that he will fit it well with the guys on the team and the coaching staff. During his recruiting process I was there for him if he had any questions, but in the end, it was his decision to make. But I'm glad he's going to be a Wildcat!"
Describe the emotion of wrestling at the NCAA Championships.
"Wrestling at NCAAs is like nothing else. The buzz around the arena just gets you so excited to wrestle. Being able to compete in front of a crowd that big is something special."
What has been your favorite thing about Northwestern?
"My favorite thing about Northwestern is all the people I've met during my time here. These people made a huge impact in my life, and I'm very grateful for meeting them."
Where is your favorite spot on campus or in Evanston?
"My favorite spots on campus are the beach and the wrestling room. Both are places that I can go to get away from everything."
What are your career plans?
"I am hoping to get into the financial field and stay in Chicago."
Describe your pre-match ritual.
"Pre-match I like to walk around behind the bench and clear my head to focus for my match. Then I always slap the coach's hand before walking out on the mat."
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement so far?
"It would probably be winning state in high school."
Tell us about some of your hobbies.
"Soccer, growing facial hair, video games."
If you could have dinner with any three people past or present, who would they be?
"Alex Polizzi, Adam Sandler, and Brett Favre."
