The #B1GCats Advance in NCAA Tournament With Win Over WSU
11/14/2015 10:44:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PULLMAN, Wash. - Behind Michelle Manning 's third game-winning goal of the year, Northwestern defeated No. 24 Washington State in a thrilling double-overtime victory on Saturday night at Lower Soccer Stadium. With the win, the 'Cats advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they will face second-seeded West Virginia.
"It is a little surreal," said head coach Michael Moynihan. "This group has been through so much. We had a talk yesterday about how much the program has changed over the last four years. They have come so far and invested so much. It is heartwarming to see the team get the benefit of all the hard work they have put in."
The Cougars outshot the 'Cats 15-9 in the match, putting six shots on frame to the Wildcats' four. WSU had six corner kicks, while NU had two.
Northwestern scored the game-winner four minutes into the second overtime period, as Big Ten All-Freshmen team member Marisa Viggiano played a through ball to Manning. Manning shook off the Cougars' lone defender and slipped the golden goal right past WSU's goalkeeper for the win.
Northwestern remains unbeaten (4-0-2) in overtime matches this season.
"I was actually really scared," Manning laughed. "I told myself to stay calm and get the shot in like I have done in practice a million times. It was definitely an adrenaline rush."
The Cougars got the first solid look on goal as Kaitlyn Johnson nailed a shot right on target in the opening minutes of the game, but sophomore Lauren Clem punched the ball straight up to keep the #B1GCats out of danger.
Clem finished the night with five saves en route to her 12th clean sheet of the year. The sophomore is just one shutout shy of tying the Northwestern all-time record.
NU had its best chance of the first half in the 25th minute of play when Addie Steiner broke through a pair of WSU defenders and launched her first shot of the night just inches high of the cross bar.
The teams exchanged possession in the final minutes of the frame, but neither squad could find the back of the net.
The 'Cats kicked off the second half strong as junior Rachel Zampa intercepted a WSU cross and found Steiner in open space, but the junior forward was called offside and the Cougars took back possession.
Chicago's Big Ten Team made some noise in the 51st minute when Manning intercepted a ball and fed it to Steiner at the top of the box. The junior forward ripped a shot to the far post, but the ball sailed high as the game remained scoreless.
Once again, both squads created multiple quality chances, but an outstanding performance by both defenses forced the game into overtime.
The overtime battle between Washington State and Northwestern was action packed as both teams pushed each other for attempts at the golden goal. After 104 minutes of play, it was the Wildcats who prevailed.
Northwestern's quest for an NCAA title continues on Friday, Nov. 20, when it heads to Morgantown to face No. 2 seed West Virginia. Game times for second-round matches will be announced later this week.
