NU Secures No. 4 Seed in B1G Tournament with 2OT Win Over UW
10/28/2015 10:39:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MADISON, Wisc. – Northwestern (13-4-2, 7-3-1 B1G) secured the No. 4 seed and will host the first-round of the Big Ten Tournament after a thrilling double-overtime victory over No. 25 conference regular-season co-champion Wisconsin (11-5-3, 8-2-1 B1G) on Wednesday night. The Wildcats snapped the Badgers nine-game unbeaten streak and handed UW its first loss since Sept. 17.
The Wildcats' seven conference wins in 2015 are the most in program history and surpass the 1998 team that registered six total Big Ten victories before advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
The Badgers were strong out of the gate and dominated possession over the first five minutes of the match, but it was the Wildcats who got the first dangerous look on goal. In the 13th minute, senior co-captain Nandi Mehta nailed a shot from 20 yards out, but Wisconsin keeper Caitlyn Clem notched her first save of the game.
Caitlyn Clem is the cousin of Northwestern keeper Lauren Clem.
Two minutes later, junior Kourtney Scott took advantage of a quality chance, but her attempt went inches wide of the goal. The Badgers countered with two point-blank attempts in the final 10 minutes of the first frame, but the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week made back-to-back saves to keep the game scoreless.
Chicago's Big Ten Team made a stellar run with five minutes left in the half as sophomore Michelle Manning dribbled through a pair of Badger defenders and found an open Brenna Lovera. Unfortunately for the #B1GCats, Lovera misread the pass and the teams headed into the break scoreless.
Wisconsin opened scoring in the 74th minute when junior Rose Lavelle worked her way past Northwestern's back line and found a clean shot to upper far post.
The Badgers' lead did not last long as the resilient Wildcats found the equalizer in the 80th minute. Junior Addie Stiener picked up a loose ball in midfield and found her team-leading seventh goal of the year on a rare breakaway opportunity.
Neither team was able to find the go-ahead goal in regulation and the 'Cats entered their fifth overtime game of the year.
Northwestern had the best chance in the first overtime period when freshman Kayla Sharples took a knock off a free kick from Mehta, but her shot was lifted just inches high of the net.
The overtime battle between Wisconsin and Northwestern was action packed as both teams pushed each other for attempts at the golden goal. After 107 minutes of play, the Wildcats found the game winner when sophomore Kassidy Gorman beat out UW's keeper from close range off an end-line serve from senior Jennifer Korn. NU's game-winning stunner was the first career goal for Gorman.
The #B1GCats kick off post-season action when they host Michigan on Sunday, Nov. 1, in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament at noon. The match will be played at New Trier HS in Northfield, Ill. (7 Happ Road, Northfield, IL 60093).
