Wildcats Shutout at Loyola, 2-0
10/27/2015 9:40:00 PM | Men's Soccer
CHICAGO — Northwestern was unable to solve Loyola's daunting defense Tuesday night, falling to the Ramblers at Loyola Soccer Park, 2-0.
The Wildcats managed just four shots in the contest that saw heavy rain and wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour. The Ramblers mustered just seven shots themselves, but were able to score a pair of first-half goals to claim the win.
"We got outworked and outhustled," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "The team we played was better than us. They executed better than us an executed their gameplan to shut us down. We have to give a better effort and have some drive. We were like zombies out there. The other team was full of energy and enthusiasm playing at home, but they outworked us and you don't even worry about performance or tactics when the other team outworks you."
The Ramblers entered the contest with the nation's second-ranked defense and ended it with their seventh-consecutive shutout.
Northwestern controlled possession for much of the first 15 minutes, but were unable to create any scoring opportunities before the Ramblers took the lead.
The Ramblers opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a little bit of luck. Brody Kraussel found some space on to the right side of the box and attempted to play a ball to the box only for the 'Cats to deflect it and see it skid by senior Zak Allen.
The lead was extended to 2-0 just eight minutes later when Kyle Thomson struck a shot in the top right corner of the goal from 30 yards out.
The Wildcats lone chance of the game came in the 27th minute when senior Cole Missimo made a run through the Ramblers' defense starting at the midfield and was able to get a shot off from just outside the 18-yard box. Dombrolowski made a diving stop to his right however to keep the 'Cats off the board.
Northwestern is back in action this Sunday when they take on Penn State at noon on the Big Ten Network. The Wildcats are currently tied for third in the Big Ten with nine points, just three points behind conference leader Rutgers. The Nittany Lions are a point back of the 'Cats.
