BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — The only stat that matters at the end of a game is the score.
The Northwestern men's soccer program battled No. 8 Notre Dame to a 1-1 draw in double overtime under the lights at Toyota Park Tuesday night behind a career-high 12 saves from senior goalkeeper Zak Allen and sophomore Elo Ozumba's third goal of the season.
"I'm really proud of the way our guys battled tonight," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "Notre Dame is a really good team. We got fortunate a few times with a couple posts on their shots, but our guys held strong and didn't break defensively. The way the sheet looks they might have deserved to come away with a better result, but I'm proud of the way we responded in the second half to get a goal to tie things up and sometimes you just have to be happy to come away with a draw."
The Fighting Irish came out firing and put three shots on goal in the sixth minute of play before finally finding the back of the net in the seventh minute. Max Lachowecki pushed the ball up the left side and pulled Allen to the near post, opening up a lane for Jon Gallagher to score his eighth goal of the season for a 1-0 Irish lead.
The Wildcats were unable to get much of anything going in the first half offensively, but the play of Allen helped keep Chicago's Big Ten Team in the game. Notre Dame finished the first half with a 15-3 advantage in shots with Allen making five saves in the first 45 minutes.
"Great effort tonight by Zak Allen," Lenahan said postgame. "To come up with 12 saves, with one that really saved the game for us, was key."
A pair of saves by Allen in the 52nd minute kept the deficit at one before the #B1GCats finally got on the board.
Senior Joey Calistri took advantage of a 1-on-1 opportunity on the right side of the box being splitting a pair of defenders with a pass to Ozumba. The sophomore had to make a slide tackle to gain possession, but came up and flicked a shot over the ND keeper to the far post for his third goal of the season in the 58th minute.
Allen made five more saves in regulation to finish with his career high and help the 'Cats push the game to overtime.
The Irish had the first chance of the extra session in the 95th minute when Patrick Hodan hit the left post on a shot from 18 yards. The 'Cats countered with an attack of their own and Ozumba was able to send a shot from the 16 yards out on the right side, but the attempt went wide.
With the wind in their face in the second overtime, Northwestern was forced to pack in the defense and play for the draw. The defense helped keep Allen from having to make another save as they headed and cleared attempt after attempt by the ND attack.
The Fighting Irish finished with a 39-7 advantage in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, but the play of the defense just five days after giving up a season-high four goals to Rutgers helped pick up the key draw.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 24 when they play their final 'home' game of the season at Toyota Park. Senior Day against Michigan State is scheduled for 2 p.m.
